The property was built in 1911.

The features on show are:

  • Low cost improvements, zoned heating controls, door closers, draft proofing throughout.

  • Renewable heating - Roof mounted evacuated solar heat tubes, heating a hot water cylinder.

The solar HW system is new so there has not been enough to for comparative energy costs. When the sun is acting on the solar collectors the cylinder is heated without any secondary heat input required. Enough hot water is created to serve four people with hot water for daily showers.

The system was installed by the house owner, who is a gas safe registered engineer. The material costs were around £2000, but this does not include labour or the cost of Scaffolding etc which could have been a similar cost again. The system has been installed to MCS standards and should be eligible for the government's renewable heat incentive payment, which means the costs will be recovered in around 7 years.

You may need to park on Watt lane near by as Cairns Road gets very congested with cars.
