My home is a small, 3 bedroomed, mid-terraced house circa 1889. It has a small off-shot kitchen. It has a small garden and yard at the back of the house - which are south-facing.

Since having the improvements listed , I have noticed that my gas and electricity bills have reduced ( I can supply further info. on this. ). It also feels warmer and cosier since having central heating installed in 2006 and double glazing, new doors and upgraded loft insulation in 2007 and under-floor insulation to cellar, in 2013. I notice from the thermostat that the temperature is maintained for longer and does not drop as low as it did before the insulation and double glazing ( there was a year between the two improvements ).

  • Low Cost measures : draught proofing to some downstairs doorways - especially to internal offshot kitchen doorway.
  • 'Big' insulation works : Insulation under living room floor via cellar space; and significant improvements to an older loft conversion - upgrading the insulation in the roof-space when the roof was replaced with new; and old dormer withsingle-glazed window  replaced with high spec. double -glazed Velux window.
  • Glazing : Double-glazing throughout house (up to the standard spec. in 2007 ) with 'trickle vents' adjustable, and draught -proof doors with double-glazed window panels.
  • Lighting : low energy light bulbs throughout (apart from on attic stairs where the weight of a low energy bulb pulls bulb away from elec. connection due to angle of baton ). Small fridge- freezer has a good energy rating.
  • High spec. heating : Combi condensing boiler with mechanical ventilation with heat recovery supplies the central heating radiators and domestic hot water.
  • Lifestyle Changes : Transport - use buses, trams and trains and walking; Food Growing -  a sq. metre planter and cloche for vegetable growing in my small garden - to start this Spring. Bought a compost bin last Autumn and composting routinely. Using more wholefoods and reducing packaged foods.

I was able to fund quite a bit of the work by taking out a Home Appreciation Loan (HAL) which involved equity release on the value of my home through Sheffield City Council's Decent Homes initiative and their partnership in a South Yorks. loans scheme. A legal charge has been lodged with the Land Registry to secure this loan. Some of the works were funded through grants base on my eligibility due to income and health factors.

You can visit this home as part of a combined Meesrbrook tour covering several properties within walking distance of each other, with co-ordinated opening times.

Buses along Queens Rd/Chesterfield Road stop at the Crown Inn next to Albert Road, or near Ponsfords.

If approaching my home from the shopping centre near Heeley Green Post Office ( this is a more level route to walk from) then use buses no.s 47, 19, 252, and the 10 circular. If approaching from Chesterfield Rd, get off at The Crown Inn ( just after the Red Lion pub ) there are many buses including 53, x17, 25 and 25a, 20 and 20a, 44a, 43, and the 10 circular, but walking from this bus route involves a walk up two steep roads - Thirlwell Rd, and then my street, Nicholson Rd ( 53 is towards the top end of the road ). There is also a cut-through from Shirebook Road - via steps.
